How to start your 2023 social media strategy off right
We’re already a few weeks into the new year and, for many, a new year means new goals and some reflection. If you’re a business owner or your marketing team lead, that should apply to your social media strategy as well. So, let’s take a look at 5 ways you can start 2023 off right!
Review
If you’re looking to take things up a notch, it’s important to review your progress so far. Ask yourself what has and hasn’t been working, what you can tweak, and what seems to be working for your competitors. Looking back and reviewing your progress will help you plan and improve your social media strategy going forward.
If you’re just starting out on social media, you won’t have any social media progress to review, but you should still be looking at your competitors. Here are a few questions to consider:
What works for them?
Who do they seem to target on social media?
Does their content seem to be engaging the right audience?
Define your goals
When approaching your social media strategy for 2023, it’s a good idea to define your goals. Your goals will determine what metrics you track (if you aren’t tracking your progress, start now!). It should also help shape what type of content you create, the calls-to-action that you use, and more.
Keep an eye on what’s trending
It doesn’t make sense to jump on every social media trend, whether that’s trending audio or music, to trending topics, themes, or memes, but you can (and should) add trends into your social media strategy. The great thing about trending audio, topics, themes, and memes is that when you incorporate them into your content, you’re using something that’s already gaining popularity and traction, which can help boost your reach. It can even help show off some of your brand’s personality and humour and that can go a long way – for example, it helps create a connection with your audience and can help make you memorable.

Use video
From TikTok to Instagram Reels and even YouTube, video content seems like it’s here to stay. If you’re not creating video content yet, you should be. Creating videos can feel intimidating but it doesn’t have to be! You can create something simple. For example, use a video you filmed from your phone and then add music or text to it in your app of choice. Or you could use templates such as those offered in Canva. If you see an Instagram Reels video that you love, you can even use it as template so that you can utilize the same audio and timing (click here to learn how)!
Incorporate User Generated Content
If you’ve been on social media recently, you may have heard the term UGC or User Generated Content. UGC is content that is created by consumers and then shared on social media or on other channels. It can be any format – from video to image, text, and anything in between.
In 2023, expect more brands to use UGC (and perhaps more users trying their hand at it)! According to a report from Stackla, nearly 80% of respondents said UGC highly impacts their buying decisions and was reported to be more impactful than both influencer and branded content.
If you’re wondering how to get started using UGC, try looking to your customers first! Check out your hashtags and tagged photos to find content created by your customers and those who are loyal to your brand. You can even ask people to post pictures and videos. There are so many possibilities with UGC. For example, if you’re a fashion or beauty brand, your customers may be posting tutorials, get ready with me videos, product images, hauls, and more – and you could be using these to showcase your brand!
Tip: If you see some great user generated content you’d like to use we always suggest asking the user if you can repost it first and credit them as well.
