Christmas marketing: Trends and ideas for 2024

There are only 13 Fridays until Christmas and we’re ready to help you shine as brightly as Christmas lights! This month we’ve been looking at various holiday topics and today we’re taking a look at some trends and ideas for 2024 Christmas marketing!

Let’s get into it!

Start early

According to the TikTok Holiday 2024 Playbook, in 2023, there was a 190% increase in #holidayshopping videos published the week prior to and after Halloween. We’re about a month out from then, so you have some time to start planning and implementing your holiday plans!

Of course we all know that everything ramps up for Christmas (and other gift giving holidays), but again, the lead up and starting early is important! Tapping into Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday is a great way to amp up excitement (and sales) leading to Christmas. In fact, the Meta Holiday Playbook shared that 77% of those shopping during Black Friday and Cyber Monday said that Meta technologies helped them make their buying decision.

You can try creating relevant and festive content, host a giveaway, or have a special sale/promotion!

Give them what they really want

When it comes to Christmas marketing, you can find gift guides for everyone in your life - a partner, a parent, a sibling, a friend, a child, anyone and everyone. When you’re trying to think of ideas for your Christmas marketing, don’t forget those who may be shopping for themselves too! Another stat from the TikTok Holiday Playbook is that 87% of TikTok users buy gifts for themselves during the holidays and this stat is higher for TikTok users compared to other platforms. Furthermore, according to Salsify, 73% of millennials and 68% Gen Zers are likely to purchase something for themselves.

So if you’re planning your Christmas marketing strategy, it might be a good idea to tap into users' desire to gift themselves what they really want!

Make the deal even sweeter

If you’ve ever thought about offering a gift with purchase, the holidays is a perfect time to do it! You can gift items like tote bags, mini sized products, branded compact mirrors, small pouches, stickers or notebooks, there are so many possibilities!

Tap into trending memes

We ALL love memes, right?! You can tap into trending memes this holiday season for some festive fun, like this post from MAC Cosmetics Canada, not only does it tap into a trending meme, it’s also funny and relatable, and sneaks in a call to action in the caption. You don’t have to (and shouldn’t) use every viral meme, but don’t be afraid to have some fun!

Work with influencers

In 2023, Sprout Social predicted that microinfluencers would help drive sales and engagement and we don’t anticipate this stopping. Microinfluencers often feel more authentic and trustworthy to their followers and engage more frequently with their audience in comparison with larger influencers. This can be a great way to build awareness and credibility for your brand!

Give them the feels

Emotions play a big role in marketing and that is especially true for the holidays.

Use storytelling to make your audience feel something - this can help them feel a connection with your brand. There are so many brands out there that are tapping into emotions like nostalgia, even going as far as bringing back old favourites, to drive sales. McDonald’s is an example of this, they brought back Boo Buckets and McNugget buddies, they created collectors glasses featuring classic Happy Meal toys, and more.
